Dutch soprano Maaike Hupperetz began her vocal training in 2011 with a pre-bachelor programme at the Conservatory of Maastricht. In 2013, she was accepted into the bachelor’s programme at the Conservatory of Tilburg, where she studied with Xenia Meijer. A year later, she transferred to the newly launched Music Theatre Classical programme, from which she graduated cum laude in 2017 with her solo performance The Diva, directed by Alexandra van Marken.
Since 2016, Maaike has received ongoing coaching from Helen and Klaus Donath. In March 2018, she appeared as a soloist in the opera Aorta during the Opera Forward Festival. Later that year, she began her master’s studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where she graduated cum laude in 2021. Throughout her studies, she participated in masterclasses with renowned artists including Margreet Honig, Ann Murray, and Dr. Bretton Brown. Her current vocal coaches are Sasja Hunnego and David Bollen.
Maaike has appeared as a soloist in a wide range of performances. In April 2019, she sang with the CvA Symphonic Orchestra under conductor Andrew Grams, in a series of concerts featuring music by Richard Strauss. That September, she toured Normandy with the East Brabant Police Orchestra, conducted by Martien Maas. In January 2020, she once again performed with the CvA Orchestra, this time under Matthew Rowe. In February, she sang the role of Vitellia in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito as part of a school production.
In spring 2023, Maaike sang the role of Micaëla in Carmen at the Cultural Conference Centre of Heraklion, under the musical direction of Myron Michalidis and stage direction of Stefanos Koroneos. Following this production, she toured through Rome, giving several concerts with the orchestra led by Martien Maas. A highlight of this tour was her performance in Vatican City, where she sang before an audience of 100,000 people and the Pope.
In September 2023, Maaike won both the First Prize and Audience Award at the Viva Classic Live competition. Since November that year, she has been engaged as a freelance ensemble member with the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam.
In 2024, Maaike was selected as the Dutch Wagner Stipendiate.
In 2025, she will combine her work with the Dutch National Opera and freelance engagements with the La Monnaie Chorus in Brussels. In the summer of 2025, Maaike will join the permanent chorus of the prestigious Bayreuth Festival, where she will also perform small solo roles including Blumenmädchen, Lehrbube, and Edeldame.
Aside from her operatic work, Maaike regularly appears as a soloist in concert performances and is also a passionate voice teacher at Nieuw Vocaal Amsterdam.
